Amazon Community Immersive Experience

Traditional communities in the Amazon

Traditional communities in the Amazon were shaped over time according to the forest, the rivers and the interaction between indigenous people and the globalized world.

The overwhelming majority of Amazonian villages are located on the banks of the river, from which comes their food and transportation. Their livelihood and medicines are taken from the forest. From both, the legends and myths.

Local residents are ethnically referred to in Portuguese as “caboclos” – people of mixed Indigenous Brazilian and European Ancestry. The caboclo figure is not only an ethnic definition, but also an archetype related to its intimate relation to the forest. This company own logo and name relates to this figure – A caboclo image surrounded by the waters, a true river guardian.

In the Amazon Community Immersive Experience we invite you to join us on a 4 day/3 nights journey to the heart of the Amazon Jungle, in a Riverside Community. During these days you will Interact with the villages day to day life and culture and certainly have a unique view of what really is the Amazon

SCHEDULE

1st Day

  • Hotel pick up and comunnity transfer
  • Traditional breakfast
  • Traditional lunch
  • Afternoon hike in the jungle

We will pick you up by car at your hotel in Manaus at 6 a.m. and take you to the city of Itapiranga, in a ride of approximately 4h. On the road we will stop to have a fantastic breakfast and go to the bathroom.

In Itapiranga, we will take a 45-minute boat transfer to the community of Livramento, located on the Uatumã River. When you arrive at Livramento, there will be a typical amazonic lunch waiting for you at the place of stay, which will be the home of a local resident, with a specially prepared room and a clean bathroom. For a more close to nature experience, you also have the option to sleep at our hammock space, deep inside the jungle.

In the afternoon we will take you on a jungle hike. As a distant community, the forest is where the native people get their food, houses, boats, fire, repellents and medicine from. During the trail we will introduce you to our forest, animals and medicinal plants. At the end there is a small river where you can swim.

After a long day of traveling and hiking, the night will be reserved for you to rest.

2nd Day

·         Visit to the Cassava Flour House

·         Visit to the reflorestation plants nursery

·         Visit to the Chelonian management structure

·         Indigenous Artefacts class

·         Handcrafts workshop

·         Sunset/night watch on the river

·         Night aligator watch

The Cassava, yuca, or manioc, is the most consumed root vegetable in the Amazon. For most communities, it is the main source of income and carbohydrates. From the Cassava it is extracted a flour and a liquid present in everyday dishes. Some species may contain the lethal cyanide, and it takes an interesting antient procedure to make the root edible.

Livramento Community takes part in a Project for the Amazon preservation. They have the knowledge and plant nursery to reforestate old plantations and cattle pasture with native species. They also manage chelonians, helping their eggs to hetch and releasing the animals once a year, which protects them from predatory hunting. Note that, as some of this activities are sazonal, at the time of your visit, plants might be at different sizes and cheloninans might be either hatching, in water tanks or reproducing. The best time to watch their release is on May. Contact us for more information.

The oldest habitants of these lands are indigenous people from the Tupi, Waimiri Atroari and Hixcaryana ethnies. Many of their artefacts are still to be found nowadays, in form of clay handcrafts wich depicts their routine, habits and animals interaction. Some of the artefacts date two thousand years B.C. and you will have a class about them.

After that, you can get to learn and make special handcrafts with amazonian raw materials, which you can take with you as a record of this nice experience.

In the evening we´ll hop on a boat adventure to watch the sunset on the middle of the river and watch alligators by the night. During this experience the motors are turned off so we can hear the true sounds of nature.

3rd Day

  • Learning how to shoot an arrow
  • Learning how to fish
  • Learning how to cook with the locals
  • Canoeing
  • Piranha fishing
  • Beach Luau

If the Cassava is the main carbohydrates source for natives, fish is what gives them most of their protein. There is no better way to learn how to prepare a delicious fish meal, than with the amazon people. By the afternoon you´ll learn how to row in a typical boat, and fish the traditional way. By night, you can enjoy a nice Barbecue at the beach, and gaze up at the starry sky.
